South Africa stands at a cusp of many positive developments with the change of guard in the leadership of our country. To ensure this opportunity can be used efficiently and positively, it may be useful to interrogate what has worked or not worked in amongst others, issues of public participation.

In this regard, the Human Sciences Research Council, has undertaken a case study looking at the protests in Vuwani which, amongst others, saw the community came to a standstill and the destruction of public property. This case study provides valuable lessons in how to engage meaningfully with communities to ensure responsiveness from government.

The study will be presented by Prof Modimowabarwa Kanyane of the Human Sciences Research Council and panellists will include among others, the Chairperson of the Demarcation Board, Jane Thupana, Mpho Mogale from COGTA and Tebogo Monama from The Star.

The Human Sciences Research Council, together with the Municipal Demarcation Board, look forward to your valuable contributions to the debate on broader thematic issues of public participation and social cohesion.
