The HSRC will along with key female stakeholders and activists host a discussion on South African women’s land ownership.  This discussion, lead by the Minister of Women in the Presidency, will focus on the current challenges faced by women to access land and own land.  One of the key objectives is to engage on the lack of property rights and how this has contributed to the exclusion of women from economic participation.

Parliament has recently endorsed a motion to expropriate land without compensation; this has direct implications for South African women who have been disempowered by patriarchy over centuries. The current epoch provides a chance to reflect on legislation and its impact on women and how it has contributed to inequality and perpetuated unemployment and poverty amongst women.

The outcome of these discussions will form part of a submission to the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Constitutional Review dealing with the land issue.
