This seminar introduces a new international partnership project between researchers from the ESRC STEPS Centre at the Institute of Development Studies (UK) and the HSRC that aims to transfer skills, build capacity and foster long-term collaboration to engage in South Africa’s green economy transition. The project, which is funded by the British Academy Newton Mobility Grant, builds on the premise that new knowledge collaborations and interdisciplinary methods are necessary to understand and address the complex and uncertain nature of contemporary sustainability challenges, and to maximise multi-dimensional and multistakeholder benefits.

Focussing on selected South Africa’s Green Fund investment projects, the project will use a combination of policy analysis, social science and participatory methods to examine how the concerns of poor and marginalised groups of society can be more effectively brought into sustainability debates and translated into policy strategies that can integrate environmental protection with the need to mitigate poverty, unemployment and inequality.

In the seminar, Dr Hester du Plessis from Research Use and Impact Assessment will give a brief introduction to sustainability research within the HSRC. This will be followed by a presentation from the two lead researchers, Dr Amber Huff and Dr Andreas Scheba, about the new partnership project and opportunity for interested stakeholders and the wider public to share their view on the project and green economy challenges in South Africa more broadly. After a formal presentation outlining the aims and specific strategies of the new partnership, participants are invited to join an informal roundtable discussion on how research can help to develop tools for policymakers, industries and practitioners to make green economy initiatives work better for the poor in the country.
