Since initiating market reforms in 1978, China experienced rapid economic and social development. GDP growth averaging about 10 percent a year has lifted more than 500 million people out of poverty.

With a population of 1.3 billion, China recently became the second largest economy and is increasingly playing an important and influential role in the global economy.  China’s growth has had an influence on Africa as China recently became the largest trading partner, with trade of US$90 billion in 2009.

Moreover, through the Forum on China Africa Cooperation infrastructural development has mushroomed on the continent.  In October, 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the One Belt One Road (OBOR). The OBOR is a development strategy and framework, which could increase infrastructural development between the two regions.  Furthermore, in 2014, President Xi Jinping also published a book titled The Governance of China which addresses current and future relations on the global platform.  The book which has sold over 4.5 million copies will be reviewed by various scholars to determine the impact of China’s economic and political governance on South Africa and the continent.
