The African Charter promotes and protects human rights and basic freedoms on the African continent, including the rights of families. In South Africa and across the region there is increased understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of family structures and care. This seminar will encourage critical reflection on families, kinship and parenthood in the African context, with a particular focus on family diversity.

Presenters will share new avenues of research and practice on families in the South African context, honing in on gendered, classed and racialised norms in parenthood and care.

Key issues that will be explored include:

  • the rights and realities of LGBTI / queer families
  • the role and status of South African men as fathers
  • parenting experiences of persons who engage in sex work.

The discussion will draw out crosscutting implications for government decision-makers and policy development.
