Time :

Kathleen Pithouse-Morgan, University of KwaZulu-Natal

Transformative Education/al Studies (TES) is an inter-institutional three-year (2011-2013) project led by researchers from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and funded by a grant from the National Research Foundation. This innovative project aims to facilitate the development of postgraduate researcher and supervisor capacity through participation in an inter-institutional learning community of academic staff who are pursuing and supervising Masters and Doctoral degrees using the approach of self-study of educational practice.

This seminar will present work-in-progress in response to a key research question that underpins the first year of the TES project: What are emerging significant issues in supporting postgraduate research supervision through participation in an inter-institutional learning community? Drawing on the growing body of academic work that explores how taking a collaborative and social approach to working with postgraduate research students can enhance their research capacity, this presentation will take a self-study of practice approach to explore the potential value and challenges of supporting supervisors through an inter-institutional learning community of postgraduate research.
