This workshop will introduce a new data resource for exploring deprivation change and spatial inequalities across South Africa. It will also introduce QGIS, an open source geographical information systems (GIS) package that can be used to analyse spatial data from sources such as the Census.

Practical exercises will be used to demonstrate the value of newly-produced Census-based deprivation measures for 250m by 250m grid cells, and also for small area layers (SAL), for 2001 and 2011. Measures of spatial inequality derived from the deprivation measures will also be used to highlight areas with marked disparities in levels of deprivation. No prior knowledge of GIS or of Census data will be assumed and the workshop will be of use to all those concerned with the changing dynamics of deprivation and inequality in South Africa. Attendees should bring their laptop (PC or Mac).
