Are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Equitable?

17 March 2020
12:30 - 14:00

Date: 17 March 2020

Time: 12:30 – 14:00

Presenter: Dr  Peter Jacobs, research director, EPD Research Programme, HSRC

What are the views of the victims of socioeconomic marginalisation and global warming catastrophes on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations? Have the voices and aspirations of social groups at the bottom of the global socioeconomic hierarchy been incorporated in the SDGs? What are the responses of policy makers, civil society formations and scholars active in the Global South to these tough and pressing questions of the 21st Century? Equitable Rural Socioeconomic Change, a new HSRC Press book, addresses these and many other fundamental questions.

The SDGs acknowledge the nature and scale of socioeconomic deprivations concentrated in countries like South Africa. Steeped in the philosophy of pragmatic solutions, it frames targets and outcomes that appear realistic on paper but closer inspection of the assumptions and mechanisms for achieving these changes by 2030 pose hard questions.

Participate in this launch and media seminar of Equitable Rural SPocioeconomic Change to help reconfigure the core principles of global transformation in the interests of our planet and humanity, with special reference to what it means for South African developmental policies.

This seminar is funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of the DSI. Please also note that this seminar is being recorded with the aim of  publishing on the HSRC podcast channel.
