Violence-related injuries are a major cause of death in South Africa, but geographical trends in certain categories of homicides such as blunt force injury deaths have not been investigated. The objective of the study is to determine the trends in the annual incidence of homicides by blunt force in a coastal and inland city of South Africa at the turn of the century. The National Injury Mortality Surveillance System (NIMSS) recorded 2923 blunt force deaths nationally between 2001 and 2002, which represents about 12.6% of all homicides deaths. Data for Port Elizabeth and Pretoria will be extracted from NIMSS and will be geo-referenced to their census main places. The mid-year population estimates by Statistics South Africa for each of the two years will be used to calculate incidence. A geographical information system (GIS) database will be created to map incidence and to analyse the trends in blunt force injury deaths across each of the two cities. This presentation will present the results of this analysis through a series of maps that depict changes in the geographical distribution of blunt force injury deaths and showcase GIS as a tool to analyse fatal injury data.
