A South-South Dialogue on Sexuality, Health, Rights and Politics: Argentina and South Africa Beyond Football

31 August 2010
12:15 - 13:30

Date :

31 August 2010

Time :

12:15 – 13:30

Presenters :

Prof Mario Pecheny, University of Buenos Aries
Prof Jane Bennet, University of Cape Town

The conversation aims to discuss some specific challenges of doing empirical and theoretical work on sexuality and politics in the South. The South is not singular, but plural: what are the main challenges on sexuality and politics in Latin America? Are they comparable to the situation in South Africa? What is the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, of social movements, and of democratisation, on sexuality? Buenos Aires, Cape Town and Pretoria are situated at a similar geographical latitude. Are our sexual coordinates also similar? This conversation between colleagues of the South will address current and past work, exchange ideas on both theory, politics and practice, opening up a space for further discussions for research and dialogue.

Mario Pecheny, PhD in Political Science (University of Paris III) is Professor of Political Science and Sociology of Health at the University of Buenos Aires and Researcher at the National Council on Science and Technology (Argentina). He has extensively published on health (HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, abortion), sexuality and politics in Argentina and Latin America. He has been a visiting scholar at Columbia University, University of Michigan, University of Paris, State University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), University of Cape Town and other institutions. His most recent book is The Politics of Sexuality in Latin America (ed. with Javier Corrales), published by Pittsburgh University Press.

Jane Bennett is Professor and Head at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. As a writer, researcher and teacher, she works beyond the university with a number of national and continental NGOs that focus on gender-based violence, LGBTI justice issues, and trafficking). She writes fiction (Porcupine was published in 2008 by Kwela Books).
