HSRC Press has just published Andimba Toivo ya Toivo: A Namibian Struggle Icon, part of the Voices of Liberation series, bringing together his selected speeches and writings, edited with biographical analysis by Heike Becker. We’re launching it at Exclusive Books V&A Waterfront on 23 April, in conversation with Becker and award-winning Namibian filmmaker Richard Pakleppa.

A co-founder of SWAPO, Robben Island prisoner for 16 years, in the same block as Mandela. A man who, upon his release in 1984, had to be persuaded to leave his cell because his comrades were still inside. And when he finally retired from politics in 2005, his parting message wasn’t triumphant. It was a warning: don’t use power to fill your pockets.

Toivo once told an audience that Namibians did not sacrifice everything just so their leaders could loot the country. Decades later, that line still lands.
