Dr Kwanele Qonono is a Manager in the Research Governance and Integrity Unit at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). He holds a PhD in Urban and Regional Sciences, a Master's degree in Disaster Risk Science and Development, BCom (Hons), Public Development and Management, and a Bachelor of Arts in Development and Environment from Stellenbosch University. His interdisciplinary academic and professional background spans research governance and ethics, public policy, urban and regional development, environmental governance, disaster risk reduction, and geospatial analysis. His areas of specialisation include urban geography, environmental studies, disaster risk sciences, and development studies, with a strong focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing.
Dr Qonono has experience in research and policy analysis, mixed-methods research, monitoring and evaluation, GIS and spatial analysis, stakeholder engagement and the translation of research evidence into policy and institutional decision-making. His research has addressed informal housing markets and urban development, environmental governance, land-use planning and disaster risk, climate and environmental challenges, and governance systems.
His current professional interests increasingly centre on research governance, research ethics and integrity, responsible research practice, institutional compliance, and strengthening systems for ethical and accountable research. He is particularly interested in how robust governance frameworks can support research quality, integrity, accountability and societal impact.
Dr Qonono is an active researcher and author whose work includes peer-reviewed research on land-use regulation and disaster risk, environmental policy and governance, quality of life, informal housing markets, and urban development. His broader research interests lie at the intersection of research governance, public policy, sustainable urban development, environmental governance and evidence-informed decision-making, with a particular interest in addressing complex development challenges in South Africa and the African continent.
