Dr Annsilla Nyar-Ndlovu
Chief Research Specialist

Position, qualifications, expertise and current work: (Highest/most relevant qualifications and skills)

Dr Annsilla Nyar Ndlovu is a chief research specialist in the HSRC’s Developmental Capable and Ethical State (DCES) research division. She obtained her PhD degree in Political Science from the

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). Her portfolio of research is diverse, including issues of social justice, social cohesion, civil society, socio-political power relations and more recently higher education studies with a focus on student support and student success. She is a qualitative research methodologist. She has a special interest in qualitative data generation methods, literature reviewing and the use of theory in qualitative data interpretation.

Nyar Ndlovu has held a number of senior- level roles include that of Senior Researcher at the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), a partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Witwatersrand; (b) Research Manager at Higher Education South Africa (HESA), now Universities South Africa (USAF), a coalition of public universities in South Africa and (c) currently, the role of Director at the South African National Resource Centre for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition (SANRC), an independent national centre based at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Publications and highly relevant or major achievements/positions:

Her most recent research project is national leadership and management of the International Survey of Peer Leaders, a multi-country survey in partnership with the University of Georgia and the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition (NRC) based at the University of South Carolina in the United States. She is an active editorial board member of Journal of Student Affairs in Africa.

Nyar Ndlovu has published 15 articles in local and international peer-reviewed academic journals. She is the author of numerous research reports. She has presented more than 100 papers at local and international conferences.
