WEBINAR | Decolonising climate risk scholarship from the global north to Africa

05 September 2025
11:00 to 13:00 SAST

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), in collaboration with the University of Fort Hare and Midlands State University (Zimbabwe), warmly invites you to a webinar on decolonising climate risk scholarship from the Global North to Africa, on 05 September 2025, from 11h00 to 13h00 (SAST) via Zoom.

As climate change intensifies, Africa disproportionately bears its impacts despite contributing the least to the crisis. Yet, much of the knowledge and policymaking around climate risks is still dominated by institutions in the Global North. This often marginalises local insights, traditional knowledge systems, and grassroots innovation that are crucial for sustainable solutions.

This webinar will create space for meaningful dialogue on critical questions, such as:

  • How can African voices and indigenous knowledge systems be better represented in global climate research?
  • Why do dominant climate models often fail to capture the lived realities of those most affected?
  • What would a truly decolonised climate scholarship look like?

The session aims to foster reflection, critical engagement, and the sharing of practical tools for transforming how climate knowledge is produced and applied. We will spotlight the role of African scholars, practitioners, and communities as authoritative knowledge producers and agents of change.

We look forward to your participation in this vital conversation and to collectively advancing more inclusive, equitable, and transformative climate research and action.
