Dr Saahier Parker
Senior Research Specialist
Dr Saahier Parker is a Senior Research Specialist in the Centre for Science in Society of the Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) research unit of the South African Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC).

He obtained a BSocSci majoring in psychology, anthropology, and gender studies from the University of Cape Town, an Honours in clinical psychology and a Masters in research psychology from the University of the Western Cape, and a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Stellenbosch.

He has 20 years of practical research experience in both the public and private sector. His research has allowed him to lead research teams in the development and measurement of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) indicators, with recognized expertise in the public understanding of science (PUS) and areas of science engagement. His work focuses on large-scale digital and online surveys, including the more than a decade working on the National Research and Development Survey and more recently the South African Public Relationship with Science (SAPRS) survey, all of which aim to develop alternative behavioral indicators for the Global South and deeper understandings of the bidirectional relationship between science and citizens.

His publication record spans 76 outputs, including authoring and co-authoring peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters (35), research reports (31), multimedia outputs (9), and recently a set of G20 Recommendations on Science Engagement. These works deal with themes of public understanding and engagement with science, science communication, and the advancement of knowledge economy indicators. Dr Parker’s research contributions have received international recognition, including the 2011 MRS International Research Award, the 2012 Bazme Adab Academic Award, and honours from the Science Communicators Association of New Zealand, alongside his selection to represent South Africa at the 2017 BRICS Young Scientist Forum.
