HSRC to host Mini Science Forum South Africa 2017

Pretoria, Friday 27 October 2017 – The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) will, with Cape Town Science Centre, IAU Office of Astronomy for Development and the SKA Africa Square Kilometre Array, host the Department of Science and Technology’s annual Mini Science Forum South Africa 2017 on 1 November 2017.

The Mini Science Forum which will be held in Cape Town under the theme, igniting conversations about science, aims to bring together local institutions and government agencies to create an interest in science.

The event will include an outreach programme involving grade 9 learners from Masibambisane Secondary School in Delft, Cape Town. Masibambisane Secondary is one of the schools benefitting from a Chevron South Africa sponsored schools programme developed by the Cape Town Science Centre that is aimed at boosting levels of maths and science.

A short panel discussion where scientists will present their work demonstrating its impact on society will be part of the programme. The sub-theme for this panel session will be, Science Transforming Society.

Panel presentations will include:

  • Dr Thierry Luescher – Igniting interest in STEM for young children – what we have learnt so far and what kinds of interventions seem to work…
  • Dr Wanda Diaz Merced –  Accessibility in science, specifically astronomy.
  • Dr Anton Binneman – Large Science Infrastructure Projects such as SKA and its impacts on local communities.

The Mini Science Forum is a community engagement ahead of the Science Forum South Africa which takes place at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria from 7th to 8th of December 2017.
