This policy brief examines two communities in the Northern Cape: Galeshewe, a township with predominantly Black residents facing high unemployment, and Platfontein, a community on the outskirts of town with approximately 5000 !Xun and Khwe San residents who struggle with inadequate housing, limited water access and insufficient cultural recognition. Recent data from the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality Integrated Development Plan (2023/2024) indicates that unemployment in Galeshewe has worsened, with the official rate being 36.3%, while youth unemployment stands at a staggering 52.2%. Both communities highlight systemic governance failures, where persistent inequalities fuel social discontent and erode democratic legitimacy. They also reflect broader patterns affecting marginalised populations across South Africa, including indigenous groups, semi-rural communities, and historically disadvantaged urban residents who remain excluded from the full benefits of democratic progress.
