In the past twenty years the CGE has moved from finding its feet as a new Commission to developing a more comprehensive vision of its role as a C9 institution focusing on gender equality in South Africa. Operating as it does in a patriarchal environment where gender is often not taken seriously, and with very limited funding, the Commission's work has nevertheless made a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. Should it develop a stronger and sharper focus and attain the necessary political 'buy-in', there is no doubt that the challenges will be overcome and the desired impact achieved.
