Conducted in 2017, SABSSM V is the fifth wave in a series of cross-sectional household surveys that provide strategic insight into the trends of the HIV epidemic and other HIV-related behavioural indicators. This survey has been conducted every few years, since 2002. For the first time in 2017, HIV drug resistance was tested among those who tested HIV positive.

Four questionnaires were used in this survey:
• Household questionnaire (also known as a visiting-point (VP) questionnaire)
• Questionnaire for parents and guardians of children aged 0–11 years
• Questionnaire for children aged 12–14 years
• Questionnaire for people aged 15 years and older
The main survey targeted 15 000 households. Of these, 12 435 (82.9%) were approached, 11 776 (94.7%) of which were valid . A household response rate of 82.2% was achieved from the valid households.
The visiting point data set has 375 variables with 18351 cases, which includes:
• demographic information
• type of grant
• primary source of drinking water
• type of toilet facility
• energy source for cooking
• type of dwelling
• socio-economic status
