Housing Crisis | Professor Ivan Turok expands on the concept of Inclusionary Housing Policy

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

Last week, South Africa’s Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, launched the Townlands Social Housing Project in Marabastad, Tshwane. It is one of the biggest social housing projects in the country. This development comes as various metros face shrinking housing budgets, pressure as a result of urbanisation and exclusionary property prices. A call has been made for government to adopt inclusionary housing policies, offering private developers incentives for providing well-located and below-market-rate housing.

The HSRC’s Professor Ivan Turok spoke to SABC News on the concept of Inclusionary Housing Policies, citing social housing as part of the solution, but not the full solution. He also puts forward the idea of skewing private sector resources towards providing affordable housing for ordinary people.
