As the world commemorates World AIDS Day on Friday, a study has shown that young female teachers are more vulnerable to HIV than their male counterparts. The most worrying thing about this, says Nomusa Cembi, spokesperson for the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), is that teachers are a microcosm of broader society. She spoke to Thabiso TT Tema, who was standing in for Sebenzile Nkambula on POWER Up on Friday.
“The study, which was commissioned by the Department of Basic Education and conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), showed that there was an increase among young female educators entering the profession, while there was a decrease among their male counterparts,” she said.
