Survey finds South Africans’ waistlines are growing

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on Tuesday took a swipe at the food industry‚ saying if it did not make healthier products‚ it might soon have no one left to sell to.

He made his remarks at the launch of the South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey‚ which found two-thirds of women and a third of men were either overweight or obese.

Limited food choices‚ which left poor people filling up on calorie-dense products that were high in fat and sugar but low on nutrients‚ were one of the reasons for the growing waistlines of South Africans‚ said the Human Sciences Research Council’s Demetre Labadarios‚ one of the study’s principal investigators.
