FOOD security will once more be top of mind this week when the world celebrates the United Nations World Food Day on October 16. The 2014 theme is “Family Farming: Feeding the world, Caring for the earth”, which focuses attention on the significant role played by family and community farming in eradicating hunger and alleviating poverty.
According to a study by the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) – The South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey – released in 2013, more than half of the country’s residents do not have regular access to enough food. Statistics SA figures show that as many as 23% of households in KwaZulu-Natal have no adequate access to food.
