Childhood obesity: The school bully that’s taking over our schools


As childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, and Physical Education is removed from school curricula, there has been a move towards creating School Wellness Centres to improve children’s overall health and physical ability.

Childhood obesity growing progressively

Childhood obesity in South Africa is growing progressively. This was highlighted in the recent report of the South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-1). This report states that, obesity prevalence for South African children aged six to 16 years is 13,5%. This percentage is higher than the global prevalence of 10%.
