Big condom shock

Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)

MORE than half of sexually active people in the Free State regularly engage in unprotected sex, putting themselves at risk of contracting or spreading HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), a study has revealed.
Only 38 percent constantly use the condom which largely shields against the spread of the Aids virus and other sexually transmitted infections.
Yet two thirds of the population in the province know about HIV and Aids and the importance of condom use.
Further, almost all of the 5 837 respondents in the door-to-door survey conducted in the Free State’s 24 municipalities know the perils of unsafe sex, and that condoms can be obtained free of charge from clinics and hospitals.
