The latest report into HIV-prevalence in South Africa has revealed that around 6.4-million people are living with the disease.

The Human Sciences Research Council says the figure has increased from 10.6% in 2008 to 12.2% in 2012.

Researchers interviewed more then 38 000 people and found that the increased prevalence of HIV in 2012 was largely due to the combined effects of new infections and a successfully expanded anti-retroviral treatment programme.
