WEBINAR | Unpacking Power and Privilege in Corruption: Insights from South Africa’s Social Norms and Behavioural Research

08 December 2025
14:00–16:00

Dear stakeholder

The HSRC, in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, cordially invites you to a webinar that explores the pivotal role of power and privilege in shaping public experiences of corruption in South Africa. Findings show how systemic inequalities, particularly class, racial, and gender-based privileges, confer advantages that affect how people in the country think about and experience corruption. The webinar will be held online on 8 December 2025.

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative findings from the HSRC’s recent national research on corruption and behaviour change, this webinar offers fresh insight into the serious problem of corruption in South Africa. The webinar builds on a symposium held in October 2024, where panellists focused on power and privilege when thy discussed findings from the first year of the research study. The same panel of experts will return to ensure continuity and deepen the discussion. Aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Strategy  2020–2030, the webinar aims to better understand how ordinary citizens can be encouraged to fight corruption. The webinar will focus on how the intersecting themes of race, gender, and class influence experiences and perceptions of corruption in the country.

Dr Annsilla Nyar Ndlovu will provide introductions, Dr Steven Gordon will present the findings, supported by Gary Pienaar. Discussants Dr Sara Jewett, Dr Anthony Kaziboni and Jonathan Timm will be invited to comment on the presentation. Rabea Kaas will provide closing remarks.

This event is part of the HSRC’s Longitudinal Studies Hub webinar series.
