We are pleased to invite you to the Science Diplomacy Summer School 2025, a pioneering initiative spearheaded by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in collaboration with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa (SDCfA), Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF), South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), African Academy of Sciences (AAS), and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
The Summer School will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 15–24 October 2025.
As the world faces increasingly complex challenges such as climate change, food security, health crises, and sustainable development—the intersection of science and diplomacy has never been more critical. South Africa, positioned as a regional leader in scientific research and international cooperation, stands at the forefront of leveraging science diplomacy to foster innovation, influence policy, and strengthen multilateral partnerships.
The programme is designed to build critical capacity in science diplomacy, empowering researchers, policymakers, diplomats, and development practitioners to harness scientific collaboration to address pressing global and continental challenges. Participants will gain conceptual frameworks, an understanding of the relevant ethics, and practical skills to navigate the dynamic interface between science, policy, and international relations. We look forward to your participation in what promises to be an engaging and solutions-driven conversation.
