HSRC WEBINAR | What does modernisation of the mining industry mean for people and communities?

29 September 2025
10:00-12:00

A key research question framing the research agenda of the HSRC’s Mining Hub is that of the modernisation of the mining industry. Accordingly, this inaugural webinar of the HSRC’s Mining Hub is hosted for two key purposes: (a) as part of our commitment to explore new innovations and good practices in the mining industry and (b) to help us lean into the current pool of research and data supporting the modernisation of the mining industry.

This webinar explores a set of digital tools developed by one of our collaborative partners, the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability (RIIS) in collaboration with the Mandela Mining Precinct and others through the Successful Application of Technology Centred Around People (SATCAP) programme.

RIIS’s Vishaylin Mahadeo will present theESG Impacts Lens Dashboard, which incorporates a set of digital tools as key indicators for social issues such as community training and social needs, SMME engagement, digital capabilities of the mine workforce, and a Change Management Blueprint for technology adoption. The dashboard features three domain-specific dashboards: the Socio-Economic Transformation Impact Dashboard, which evaluates social impacts like skills training and entrepreneurship in preparation for mine closure; the Impact of Automation Dashboard, which measures the effects of automation on workforce skills and digital transformation; and the Change Impacts Dashboard, which assesses changes in people, technology, and organisational structures.

This webinar will lead us into a discussion about the intersections between people and the mining industry as well as the broader role and impact of the mining industry on community and society.
