It is widely understood that innovation can contribute to alleviating the scourge of unemployment in upper-middle income countries like South Africa, which experience high unemployment rates. However, innovation may also introduce unintended consequences at firm level, such as job losses as a result of product, process or marketing automation. Drawing from an existing methodology, and data from the Business Innovation Survey 2010-2012 dataset, this seminar will explore the relationship between innovation and employment in South Africa by examining the direct and indirect effects of different types of innovation activity on employment growth. Specifically, analysing the link between innovation and employment at firm level yields vital insights into: 1. the factors that influence innovation activity, 2. the direct and indirect effects of different types innovations on employment growth, as well as 3. the impact innovations aimed at saving costs may have on employment. The seminar will take the form of a short presentation on the study’s methodology, followed by an evidence-based dialogue between Dr Moses Sithole and Yasser Buchana, which will be aimed at unpacking and interrogating the results of the research, and elaborating key questions for discussion with the audience.
