The HSRC cordially invites you to join our webinar on digital sustainability inventions on 24 October 2024 via Zoom.
This seminar is based on research investigating digital sustainability inventions emerging from the European Union (EU) and implications and lessons for South Africa. Globally, we face urgent imperatives to grow digital sustainability inventions that can be harnessed to mitigate the effects of climate change. Even the European Union (EU) faces challenges, although it offers the greatest breadth of relevant technological specialisations, concentrated mostly in the transportation and energy sectors. However, the EU lacks specialisation advantages in some key ICT-related technologies and in the top four climate change mitigation and adaption technologies associated with digital sustainability inventions.
The main speaker will be Prof. Björn Jindra from the Copenhagen Business School who is also a visiting international research fellow at the HSRC. He will outline possible pathways for smart specialisation in digital sustainability technologies, including in renewable energies, transportation, and carbon capture storage, using existing or complementary specialisations, and international collaboration.
Dr Wilfred Lunga, a Chief Research Specialist at the HSRC, will then reflect on the implications and lessons for South Africa considering our contextual needs and capabilities.
The event will be co-chaired by the HSRC’s Darryn Whisgary and Dr Jacqueline Borel-Saladin. The HSRC’s Prof. Charles Hongoro will be the respondent.
