The HSRC working together with partners, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), and PEPFAR South Africa, have the pleasure of inviting you to the launch of the national fieldwork implementation of the 6th national HIV household survey (South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey known as the 2021 South African HIV Behavioural, Sero-status and Media survey or SABSSM VI for short). The survey is marking its 20th anniversary since the first survey was commissioned and funded by former President Nelson Mandela through the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2001.

This survey will be the largest survey ever conducted by the HSRC, with approximately 93 000 participants expected to be interviewed and 65 000 blood specimens collected for laboratory testing. This information will help us combat the spread of HIV through ART medication and SABSSM VI will determine HIV incidence, prevalence, antiretroviral treatment use, viral load suppression, HIV drug resistance, HIV risk behaviours, SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, and sources and modalities of HIV communication. In addition, COVID-19 antibody testing will be included to estimate the proportion of infection at national and provincial level.  Data collection at national, provincial, and district level provides strategic insight into the progression of the epidemic, and therefore this survey series is critical for the country’s HIV/AIDS response.

This is a hybrid event with physical attendance in Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban, and virtual attendance via Teams.  Please register to attend the virtual event by clicking here, or register to attend the physical event by emailing Ms Yolande Shean (yshean@hsrc.ac.za) and indicating which office you will be attending at. Please note that space is limited (30 persons per office) due to COVID-19 regulations, and therefore physical attendance will be confirmed prior to the event.
