The HSRC cordially invites you to join our seminar on the unfolding security crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Recently, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), one of the longest and most complex conflicts in Africa’s modern history has re-escalated. What began as a political struggle over resources and power has evolved into a humanitarian disaster that continues to claim millions of lives. The roots of the conflict are deep, stemming from colonial legacy, weak governance, and external interventions. Some neighbouring countries have been alleged to exert influence over the vast eastern DRC region for economic and security reasons. The territory holds significant natural resources such as timber, rare earth minerals, and gold. The area also harbours extremist militias who are accused of being responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This presentation offers a comprehensive approach to resolving the conflict, focusing on the roles of various actors, the root causes of the war, and actionable recommendations for a peaceful resolution.
