This year marks 11 years since the passing of Nelson Mandela and South Africa is at the same time reflecting on its 30 years of democracy. We would like to invite you to a colloquium to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 on 30 – 31 July 2024.
Celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day provides an opportunity for South Africa to reflect on its journey towards an equal and just society, and to embrace discussions that foster a fully transformed South Africa and Africa. The country continues to enjoy diplomatic relations and engages in activities that create capacity exchange opportunities for a universally transformed continent.
The colloquium will, therefore, be co-hosted by the South African Embassy to Senegal and Human Sciences Research Council.
Themes of the Colloquium will include:
- Pan-African leadership in post-colonial and transitional African societies: Pan-African leadership ideals of Presidents Nelson Mandela and Leopold Senghor.
- Science diplomacy as a tool for advancing climate change, the future of society, and skills development.
- Economic and cultural diplomacy in the era of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and its role in redress and restitution civic education; promoting inclusive economic prospects cognizant of the historical injustices; and bridging the inequality gap, with a special focus on women and youth dividend.
- Implications of the rise in hybrid democracies and authoritarian states in Africa, and the role that Senegal and South Africa can play towards a stable and prosperous Africa.
