Provincial dialogues: Key Findings of the Sixth South African National HIV, Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI)

Using research to create a healthier nation

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and its partners will host individual provincial dialogues to discuss key findings for the respective provinces from South Africa’s latest national household HIV survey. The HSRC completed the Sixth South African National HIV, Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey (SABSSM VI) in 2023, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the National institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

The survey marks 20 years of the SABSSM series, with the first survey commissioned and funded by former President Nelson Mandela through the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2001.

With the support of local and international donors, the series has become a major source of information for measuring progress in the implementation of South Africa’s national strategic plan to curb HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis.

Having HIV data at the provincial level provides insight into the progression of the epidemic in different regions of the country. At the dialogues, we will engage with key stakeholders about the individual provincial results to support uptake of the findings for use in policy formulation, strategic information practice and the development of provincial interventions. The dialogue is a collaborative event organised by the HSRC and its partners.
