MASTERCLASS | Knowing and representing the climate crisis

Knowing the crisis, decolonising knowledge, and advancing sustainability.
23 September 2026
14:00 - 16:00

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) cordially invites you to join our Climate Crisis Masterclass. The Climate Crisis Masterclass seeks to examine the current climate crisis on the continent and interrogate the mitigating strategies that climate stakeholders have adopted to address the challenge.

More so, to effectively communicate the multifaceted nature of environmental change, training must centre on knowing and representing the climate crisis through a critical and inclusive lens.

Understanding the crisis requires moving beyond traditional scientific metrics to integrate systemic drivers, human impacts, and localised realities. A core pillar of this framework involves decolonising knowledge, which actively deconstructs Western-centric paradigms by elevating indigenous wisdom, regional traditions, and frontline community experiences into mainstream environmental discourse. Integrating these diverse ways of knowing fosters a holistic foundation essential for genuine sustainability – one that prioritises ecological balance alongside social justice and equitable resource governance.

Ultimately, this approach equips learners to critically analyse environmental data, challenge historical biases in climate narratives, and co-create adaptive, culturally relevant solutions for global resilience.
