Launch: Democracy@30 QwaQwa study findings

Towards a reimagination of the QwaQwa we collectively desire
27 September 2024
08:00 - 13:00

QwaQwa has a rich history of socio-political struggle embedded in diverse sites of agency and resilience. This study was commissioned by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and was conducted by the University of Free State in collaboration with the HSRC research team. It sought to create historical and contemporary connections of memory rooted in celebrating 30 years of Democracy. The HSRC, as the statutory council responsible for carrying out policy-oriented research or applied research through the humanities and social sciences, framed grassroots-inspired research, titled Democracy@30, to explore and investigate local voices in a celebration of South Africa’s democracy at 30 years in 2024. As a constitutional democracy, the aspiration that South Africa is a people-led political system centred on creating a “better life for all” guided the study.
