SFSA 2024 | Designing International Science Partnerships for Impact

A Science Forum South Africa 2024 side event
02 December 2024
14:00 to 17:00

Our pursuit for economic development through various industrial revolutions has led us to a new and unpredictable world that is challenging how humans interact with their surroundings. As a global community, we look to science and innovation to help humanity adapt to this changed world and to halt or reverse some of the damage caused to the planet and human health.

Designing impactful science programmes therefore requires us to forge equitable partnerships drawn from values and a pursuit of a better world.  The principles upon which the collaboration is built must lead to trusted connections that can contribute to local and sustainable development goals. Our programmes must be human-centred, seeking to create conditions conducive to our global communities to perform optimally. The thread of ubuntu must form an integral part of how we work and interact through our partnerships.

The Human Sciences Research Council in collaboration with the British Council cordially invites you to an interactive and engaging panel discussion with speakers from the government, academia, science and innovation institutions and the private sector.

The session will feature the following speakers:

  1. Dr Jen Bardsley (Head of Science), The British Council
  2. Aidan Darker (Head of Africa Science & Innovation Network), British High Commission to South Africa
  3. Dr Palesa Sekhejane (Director Strategic Partnerships), Human Sciences Research Council
  4. Prof. Erika Kraema-Mbula (Professor of Economics),  DSI/NRF/Newton Fund Trilateral Chair

Objectives:

  • Encourage collaboration amongst partners working in science and innovation.
  • Agree on the principles of impactful science programme design.
  • Advocate for equitable partnership in science and innovation.
