Join us for an insightful seminar exploring the intersection of transdisciplinarity, citizen science, and grassroots innovation in developing inclusive approaches and disaster risk communication and management in developing countries.
The event will take place on 30 October 2024 at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.
In an era of growing climate-related disasters and socio-economic vulnerabilities, this seminar will emphasise the value of inclusive innovations that harness local knowledge and citizen participation to build resilience. It will also highlight the crucial role of transdisciplinarity in advancing citizen science and grassroots innovation for disaster preparedness.
Through real-world case studies, we will explain aspects of disaster risk communication, focusing on how communities can co-create strategies that reflect their unique contexts. We will also explore the role of grassroots innovation in empowering marginalised groups and enhancing disaster preparedness at the local level, offering pathways to more equitable and effective risk communication. Chapter 5, authored by Dr Hester du Plessis (University of Pretoria), covers a transdisciplinary approach to citizen science and grassroots innovation. It discusses citizen science, grassroots innovation, science literacy as a precondition for grassroots innovation, and the role of technology in supporting these actions.
Chapter 7, written by the HSRC’s Drs Wilfred Lunga and Konosoang Sobane, explores the value of inclusive innovations for disaster risk communication and management in developing countries. It includes case studies, conceptual discussions on disaster risk reduction and communication, and practical guidelines for designing inclusive disaster risk communication strategies.
