The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) invites you to the book launch of Soweto’s Theatre of Resistance, 1984-1994: Gibson Kente, Matsemela Manaka and Maishe Maponya by Andile Xaba. This book explores the theatre approaches of Manaka and Maponya, showcasing the richness of cultural expression during a pivotal decade in Soweto. It also reflects on the broader theatre movement in the township, where approximately 50 groups performed in community halls rather than formal theatre venues.
In the absence of dedicated theatre buildings, spaces such as Eyethu Cinema, the Donaldson Orlando Community Hall, Diepkloof Hall and the Funda Centre became vital cultural hubs — with the latter playing a key role in nurturing Black Consciousness Movement theatre. While all three were celebrated in South Africa, Manaka and Maponya also achieved notable international recognition. Together, they influenced and inspired a new generation of township playwrights. The book further situates their work within the socio-political context in Soweto, which both hindered and helped the development of theatre.
