Who we are

Research, Development, Science, and Innovation (RDSI)

Who we are

The Research, Development, Science and Innovation (RDSI) unit is a dynamic research unit focused on how science, technology, and innovation (STI) are created, developed, and used to shape society. We conduct strategic, policy-oriented research that informs how STI can drive inclusive, sustainable development and tackle pressing societal challenges. RDSI is made up of two specialised centres:

  • CeSTII – Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators
  • CSIS – Centre for Science in Society

What we do

RDSI aims to measure and maximize the societal benefits of STI by bridging research, policy, and society. Through cutting-edge and interdisciplinary collaboration, we generate actionable insights to drive innovation to tackle inequality, unemployment, and poverty, for a better future. Our goal is to deliver globally recognised and locally relevant research excellence, shaping evidence-informed policymaking and practice. To this end, we:

  • Conduct robust research to inform STI policies for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
  • Build capacity for STI measurement in South Africa, Africa, and the global South.
  • Promote collaboration and partnerships to enhance STI research and innovation.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure research outputs influence policy and practice.

Our research priorities

RDSI focuses on key thematic areas aligned with South Africa’s strategic plans to achieve national development goals:

  1. Measuring national R&D activity Tracking investment and trends in research through national surveys and analysis.
  2. Innovation in formal & informal sectors Surveying business and agricultural innovation to support economic modernisation.
  3. STI for inclusive development Creating new indicators and frameworks to tackle societal challenges.
  4. Capacity building & partnerships Strengthening STI measurement and collaboration in South Africa, Africa, and beyond.
  5. Science & innovation engagement Enhancing public engagement and policy dialogue to maximise societal impact.
  6. Digital society Exploring how digital transformation affects people and society – and how to make it inclusive.
